Spotlight on Board Members of Pacemaker International US Inc

Rachel Luo, Secretary

As a sustainable development professional, Rachel aims to empower people to find informative, lasting solutions to challenges they face in their local communities and around the globe. She joined Pacemaker International US Inc. to empower youth for action through education.

Rachel has analyzed innovation and sustainability policy at the World Bank to support the creation of a €1 billion loan program and provided research support to countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. She has also covered clean energy markets for Bloomberg and supported the implementation of decarbonization strategies for Fortune 500 companies. Through her work, she has seen the lasting power of enabling change through equipping people - in the field or in the boardroom - to take the actions they need to solve collective challenges.

Peggy Mativo-Ochola, President

Peggy Mativo-Ochola received her MBA from Harvard Business School and graduated from Harvard University where she majored in Chemistry and East Asian Studies. While volunteering at a rural school in Tanzania, Peggy began to truly understand the extent of overcrowding and understaffing characterizing the educational system in much of East Africa. In Kenya alone, the teacher shortage is estimated at 92,000 with the average public school teacher charged with 52 students. To address this issue, Peggy launched PACE, which recruits and trains recent high school graduates to volunteer as teaching assistants at Kenyan schools. PACE offers a win-win solution for the volunteers, who receive valuable training and experience, and schools, which benefit from much needed support in areas such as grading, tutoring, mentoring, and language instruction.

Christopher Hopper, Treasurer

Dr. Christopher Hopper received his Medical Doctor (MD) degree from Wayne State University, his Master of Science in Public Health (MScPH) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Linguistics and Celtic Languages and Literatures. He completed his three year Family Medicine Residency in Michigan where he currently resides. He is currently enrolled in a Yoga Teacher Class and a fellowship in Integrative Health and Medicine as of current.

Believing education to be the great equalizer amongst people of various backgrounds, he works to support student and patient learning across all ages. He previously ran his own tutoring business in Michigan where he reached over 1000 students from ages 6 to 65 years. Back in 2013, he volunteered for PACE in Kenya (the organization that Peggy founded) and discovered his love for supporting educational development initiatives in East Africa. He is an avid believer in helping to support young minds and organizations in their endeavours to meet each student's needs where they are at and to help them get where they want to go. He believes education is a key to health, wellness, and social connectedness and will lead to a ripple effect across society that will culminate in well-adapted individuals to the modern world who can achieve their dreams and inspire others in turn.
